At last, James Tomkins is back.
With Roy’s only injury worry being Conor Wickham (currently) James Tomkins will be looking to claim a place back in the heart of defence, and wanting to form a CB pairing with Sakho, however with Gary Cahill coming into the side whilst both were injured and Martin Kelly putting in very solid performances alongside him, Roy has a pleasant dilemma; who should be at the heart of his defence?
Gary Cahill has filled in and since his debut, he has shown that he is a winner and for Palace, and experiences leader at the back seems vital.
He has looked good with whoever he has been paired with (apart from Tottenham when an unfit Sakho was forced to play) and for me, a leader like Gary is needed.
Tomkins showed leadership too at the back of the defence and Sakho showed a level of skill which Palace had not seen in a while before his arrival. Together they were great, and it showed when the Eagles finished with the 6th most clean sheets in the league last season (12).
Norwich on Saturday is a huge game, and home fans will hope that there is no last-minute drama after the last couple of home games. For me, Tomkins probably needs to gain match fitness before he comes into the side, especially before such a vital fixture. However, fans across social media have flirted with the idea of Tomkins possibly playing RB when fully fit and it’s an interesting idea, but I feel he might have to take a role on the bench for parts of this season if Sakho and Cahill play well on the weekend.
There is no doubt however that all three will feature, seeing as Crystal Palace have been hit with a lot of injuries over the last few seasons.
